RILEY & PHILINE

Volume 195 covers a single day from both ends. At one end is Riley Mitchel, whom Jessee B keeps inside an A frame in the hills above Los Angeles, where she reads the paper with her knees drawn up on a gray wool chair, lets a white cotton slip give up at the first raked window, and finally wraps herself in the duvet and stands at the glass grinning like the weather is someone else's problem. Unfiltered.

At the other end is Philine Mollering, photographed by ArtofLiving on Mediterranean granite worn smooth by wind, where the sun hammers the rocks at midday and then slides behind the headland over a harbor of moored sailboats while she lies at the waterline, chin in both hands, the tide nudging her elbows.
One woman never lets the day begin and the other stays until it is gone. Over a hundred pages, from the unmade bed to the last boat in the harbor.
