IRENE NANNI . EVELINA VOROSHILOVA
Bali can be read from a bedroom chair or tasted off the sand, and this volume does both. Evelina Voroshilova spends an unhurried stretch in a Mengwi villa with a guidebook open on the bed, the ceiling fan turning above her as she reads about the island from inside it. Jessee B builds the frames around that stillness and the small domestic rituals of the place.
Irene Nanni takes the second half of the story to Nyang Nyang Beach, where Pietro Favaron finds her barefoot in the sand with a star fruit in hand and the cliffs at her back. Her chapter is the bolder of the two in its honesty, but it is framed with the same care as the rest. Set side by side, the two stories tell you more about the island than any guide could. Volume 197 runs past 100 pages, and every one of them is an invitation to the island.
