The Atlantic at Clifton does not warm up. It comes off the Benguela current cold in every season, which makes the granite boulders the only reasonable place to stand, and that is exactly where Wezlew and Claire Molin spent this issue, Unfiltered and in no hurry, the Twelve Apostles stacked behind them and the swell arriving on its own schedule.

Twenty minutes inland the climate changes completely. Jessee B found Meg Baugley in a house built into the slope with mist still on the mountain, a bed left exactly as it was, and an oversized flannel doing the work of an entire wardrobe. Meg is a debut, and she spends most of her frames laughing, which is not something a photographer can direct.

Volume 190 is our first issue shot start to finish in South Africa, and it took a country carrying two climates inside one postcode to build an issue that argues with itself this beautifully.
